This event will provide clear guidance on information governance responsibilities and control, how these affect research activities and how the SLMS Information Governance Framework can help researchers meet their legal obligations.

The event is aimed at anybody handling personal identifiable data as part of their research.

Attendance at this event will count towards your information governance training needs ‘Introduction to Information Governance’ under the SLMS IG Framework'. Attendance will be recorded on the SLMS IG training register and a certificate of attendance will be issued.

Please note: This training does not cover NHS Trust information governance obligations.

Background

The protocols for handling identifiable data are tightening...Researchers should be aware that they must comply with the eight principles of the Data Protection Act 1998. The Act requires appropriate information security to be in place to protect sensitive personal data. A contravention of the data protection principles can result in a penalty of up to £500,000.

As a recipient of healthcare information UCL SLMS has particular obligations to assure external organisations supplying this data and ultimately the research subjects themselves. This assurance process is known as information governance. The SLMS IG Framework controls and monitors how personal data is handled for UCL SLMS healthcare research, enforcing standards based on the current legislation. The standards required by the SLMS IG Framework will ensure that UCL SLMS retains its reputation as a world class healthcare research organisation. Indeed, providing evidence of good information governance is key to the research application process and will become more crucial in the future.
